Weekend Kpop Update | SNL Korea Apologizes for Girls Generation Skit + TWICE Individual Teaser Videos

This weekend a lot happened. I saw there was just way too much going on with new rumors cropping up about plastic surgery and fans fervently denying the accusations and with new music being released, it was pretty busy. But one story in particular, I just couldn’t ignore. Not because the story itself upset me or anything but because the reaction was a bit… drastic.

I love Girls’ Generation. I love Wonder Girls. Both are respectively amazing groups with women who are amazing singers and performers. SNL is known for pushing the limits. It’s what they do and it’s all for laughs. Nothing personal. No one is off limits. So it was no surprise that with Wonder Girls being featured on the show they would find someway to dig at another popular girl group who just so happened to be Girls’ Generation. The skit, “The 5th Army President”, featured the Wonder Girls crowned as being the number 1 girl group for soldiers. Well at one point in the skit, the social burn photos and stomping photos of SNSD. Fans were livid! So angry I can’t even post a video for you guys because it’s already been removed.

SNL Korea released the following statement in the aftermath:

We would like to address the scene involving Girls’ Generation that aired during the ‘The 5th Army President’ digital skit of yesterday’s episode hosted by Wonder Girls. While trying to illustrate Wonder Girls’ history in a drama format, we couldn’t avoid mentioning the most popular group Girls’ Generation. We apologize for making Girls’ Generation fans uncomfortable and we will make sure to be more attentive in the future. The controversial scene is be either deleted or revised during reruns of the episode. We apologize again to Girls’ Generation, their fans, and SM Entertainment.

I guess it goes to show that you have to make sure in doing comedy that you will be treading very lightly in the world of fandoms.

In lighter news, TWICE is getting ready for their offical debut as the new girl group for JYP! They released individual teaser videos to get the fans ready. Have you seen them yet? These videos have everyone talking right now. Why? Because… well… the videos are creepy! Yeah I said it! They’re just really really creepy! Do not be fooled by the “sweetness”. I have a feeling that their debut song might be on the dark side or maybe not. Maybe JYP is playing games with us.

I advise you not to watch them alone at night and with your headphones in at full blast.

You have been warned.

Weekend Kpop Update | iKON “Rhythm Ta” Disses Seniors and Bobby’s Response + YG Speaks Out on Mnet Issue + Taeyeon Solo Preview (Video)

Ok so a lot happened over the weekend. Rain chose to join H Entertainment after leaving CUBE instead of creating his own agency, B.A.P. is preparing for a concert, there were marriages and engagement announcements and netizens are fighting again… great weekend for kpop.

But mainly, the news was focused on YG and this time the attention was geared towards Yang Hyun Suk and iKON. And let me start by saying, iKON dug a hole for themselves. It seems that fans listened to and began dissecting the lyrics of iKON’s new song “Rhythm Ta” and to put nicely, they’re not a “fan” of the lyrics.

“We’re not picky, for example, a time and place

We don’t try to act cool, for example, idols these days”

(“Rhythm Ta” lyrics)

But the fans weren’t having it. Fans were reminding iKON in their comments that they are idols too and that they have to be more responsible with their words. And even wondering what made them think it was ok to say these things when they just debuted. This wasn’t the first time that Bobby has said things that would be considered, “putting his foot in his mouth”. Remember that VIXX comment? “Boy group rappers come on stage with a clock dance. If you’re tone deaf, go practice.” and then let’s not forget the BOYFRIEND comment or even the times that they went in on how idols try to look good versus performing well. The list goes on.

But have no fear, Bobby has responded.

“I myself am an idol and iKON are also idols. I did diss many people but it wasn’t necessarily a diss towards idols but my way of telling them, ‘Let’s try our best together.’ That way idols rappers wouldn’t be disregarded.”

(source: allkpop)

Uhhh… ok Bobby whatever you say. It’s just really suspect to me. And you guys know I try to be as neutral as possible but Bobby has been getting the side-eye from me a lot lately with his actions. This isn’t helping.

Moving along…

Yang Hyun Suk has been giving a lot of interviews lately and clearing up everything! Any type of speculation you had before, he’s clearing that up in some way. Even with the saejaegi. (Btw, he’s ready to go back to the prosecution on that one! He said he’s gonna meet with J.Y. Park to discuss his ideas on it and he’s ultimately ready to report it again.) But aside from that, a lot of people are wondering, “What’s up with him and Mnet?” After saying that iKON had “no plans” to appear on M! Countdown due to their schedule and being in Japan. The question remains, are they “frenemies” now?

“Our relationship with Mnet is good. Just because we’re close does not mean that we cannot criticize. Taking them out of the ranks just because they chose to perform their debut at a different showcase does not make sense.”

(source: koreaboo)

I think I’ll have to take his word on that. Do I think there are some hard feelings here? Maybe. But only because, since he said that they’re close, it would seem like they were attacked a bit. So they kinda went at each other, kinda like how friends fight right? No…? Ok.

Now for some lighter news. Have you seen Taeyeon’s teaser for “I”?

Weekend Kpop Update | Backlash from Fans Over BTS Concert Tickets + iKON Not Included in Mnet’s Music Show Chart + Lovelyz8 Album Teaser

So this weekend was a pretty busy one in the world of kpop. I was going to do individual posts on each story but honestly, it’s so much easier to just consolidate them all into one Weekend Update. And if you haven’t guessed, yes, this is going to be a new series. Instead of all the posts flooding your emails (sorry about that) I’m just going to combine all the news into one post. This will be a daily thing. One post for the top kpop stories that I really felt need to address. So there will be a “Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday Kpop Update”.

Weekend Update:

BTS News

When organizing a concert, promoters and concert organizers try to be as unique and original as possible to build up the excitement for the concert. In this instance, organizers were a little too unique. The idea was that fans wouldn’t purchase a ticket the standard way, they’d get a ticket by purchasing a shirt for $70 to attend one of the four shows in San Francisco, California on September 22nd, Houston, Texas on the 24th, Atlanta, Georgia on the 26th, and Toronto, Canada on the 27th. Shirts were only available online. Sounds pretty simple right? Unfortunately, this led to the Atlanta show being oversold.

According to several fan accounts, due to the Atlanta concert being oversold and the small size of the venue, many fans (said to be approximately 100 or more) were left out in the rain and unable to watch their favorite idols perform. Instead, notes were handed out explaining the situation which read, “We’re sorry the venue is at capacity, we will give you a full refund as well as a group photo and hi-touch with BTS after the show. Please write your name and e-mail address and we will give you a full refund.”

(source: koreaboo)

Of course, not all of the announcements ended with cheers or silence. In one video it showed just how outraged and vocal fans were at the announcement that not only would they not be seeing the show, but there was no real solution for the mishap.

The worst part about this is apparently TGM knew the show had been oversold for a while!

Hopefully everyone was able to get their refund by now but I think this is another one of those instances where this may be going on for some months to come.

iKON News

I guess it wasn’t enough for iKON to be accused of sajaegi just a few days ago in a recent news report. Now they won’t be included on the Mnet’s Music Show Chart. Fans expressed their outrage and they got a response from Mnet.

“Our chart is a broadcast music chart not a regular music chart. We tend to include songs that are promoted on music shows. As iKON’s ‘My Type’ is not being promoted on music shows it was excluded,” the company explained.

(source: kpopstarz)

Of course fans weren’t the only ones to express their disappointment in Mnet’s choice to exclude iKON from the chart. YG also released a statement expressing similar sentiments to the fans.

In an article with Newsen on September 25, YG entertainment affiliates expressed their own disappointment. “It doesn’t make sense that iKON was excluded from the charts. Before this there were songs included that weren’t promoted in music shows,” YG’s side stated. Mnet still hasn’t talked with us directly about the issue.”

(source: kpopstarz)

Mnet may not have responded to the statement from YG, but Mnet supporters surely did! They took to social media to say that YG could potentially be using this as a “media ploy”. Others stating that Mnet’s policy is not a secret and there are in fact other artists who have not been included in the charts as well for the same reason.

I personally don’t think this will get iKON on the charts but it may convince YG to partner up with Mnet in the future when it comes to promotion.

Lovelyz8 Album Preview

Are you ready for the new Lovelyz8 album? Woollim released a video containing audio samples for the new songs, “Welcome to the Lovelyz8”, “Ah-Choo”, “Shooting Star”, “Hug Me”, “How to Become a Pretty Woman”, “Sweet and Sour”, and “Rapunzel”.

And that was your weekend update!
