Album Spotlight | Younha “UNSTABLE MINDSET”

Sometimes albums and EPs come out that seriously stick with me for days and weeks. I really feel like this one will be one of those EPs that does that. But then again, I love Younha. She literally can only produce amazing songs in my mind. I love Winter Flower and 스무살 어느 날 (One Day of Twenty).

CL “In The Name Of Love” | Album Spotlight

Okay, so I used a song from this album for the Kpop Teaches Korean Too post but I really had to highlight this one! I have been listening to this album almost everyday ever since it came out! I was a big fan of 2NE1 and my heart shattered to pieces when they disbanded. But following each of the member’s music careers (and Minzy’s dance career), it’s almost like having them back.

This album though… it’s sooooooo CL!! It’s such a good body of work and I’m so happy that she’s finally free to release music that represents her style and her taste! My personal favorites on the album are “Rewind”, “I Quit”, and “Paradox.”

If you haven’t heard it yet, check it out below!

CL “Rewind” | Kpop Teaches Korean Too

안녕하세요!

It’s been so long since I’ve done one of these but when I heard this song I just had to do another post like this.

Let’s get started!

We’re going to focus on the chorus of one CL’s latest songs, “Rewind.” I wanted to look at this part of the song because it’s a bit slower than the rest of the song so the words will stick out more and be more recognizable.

Chorus:

우리 다시 시작하자 (Uri dasi sijakaja)
Never meant to change
The fire in your eyes
처음으로 워- (Cheoeumeuro wo-)
처음으로 워- (Cheoeumeuro wo-)
돌아가자 (Doragaja)

Starting with the first part of the chorus, “우리 다시 시작하자 (Uri dasi sijakaja)” you can break this part down to understand it based on what you know the words mean.

  • 우리 (Uri) | “we; us”
  • 다시 (dasi) | “again”
  • 시작하자 (sijakaja) | “let’s begin”
    • This word comes from the verb 시작하다 (sijakhada)
    • 하자 (haja)
      • 하다 | to do
      • -자 | let’s

So by breaking this down, we can ultimately come up with the translation: “Let us start again” or “Let’s start again”

Next, 처음으로 워- (Cheoeumeuro wo-)

  • 처음으로 (Cheoeumeuro)
    • 처음 (cheoeum) | the first time; the beginning
    • 으로 (eu-ro) | direction particle meaning “to”
  • 워 (wo) | “woah”
    • haha, I left this in but this is literally just dragging out 으로 in the song, it actually only serves the purpose of making the chorus sound good

Okay, from this breakdown we get, “Back to the beginning” or “To the beginning.”

  • Quick note here: Remember before when I said it’s important to know the context when you’re translating? This is another example of context helping with translation. Since she started by saying “let’s start again,” adding “back to the beginning” is a contextual translation and not necessarily a literal one. Literally, she’s saying “to the beginning” or “at the beginning.”

So far our translation is:

Chorus:

Let’s start again
Never meant to change
The fire in your eyes
Back to the beginning
Back to the beginning

And finally the last line, “돌아가자 (Doragaja).”

  • 돌아가자 (Doragaja)
    • 돌아가다 (doragada) | “To return” or “To go back”
    • -자 | let’s

So, from the breakdown we get, “let’s go back” or “let’s return”

Okay, so the official translation:

Chorus:

우리 다시 시작하자 (Uri dasi sijakaja)
Never meant to change
The fire in your eyes
처음으로 워- (Cheoeumeuro wo-)
처음으로 워- (Cheoeumeuro wo-)
돌아가자 (Doragaja)

Let’s start again
Never meant to change
The fire in your eyes
Back to the beginning
Back to the beginning
Let’s go back

When you listen to kpop songs, find sections where you can easily identify what’s being said and do your own breakdowns. Try doing it first based on your memory and then go back and check your work. You may be surprised by how much you actually understand.

Artist Spotlight | WINNER

WINNER is released their 3rd Mini-Album “Cross” today!! They have also released the music video for their single “SOSO” today. It’s amazing and I really like it. The video is actually also really pretty to look at. I’m not really sure why but I really thought it was so aesthetically pleasing. (Is that a thing?)

If you haven’t heard the album I added the album sampler video to this post so you can check it out!
