Wednesday Kpop Update | Unpretty Rapstar 2 “Rigged” Accusations + SM Entertainment New Group + 9Muses Comeback and Teasers

First off,  Happy Belated Pepero Day! (I couldn’t go without saying that after seeing story after story surrounding it.) I will say that today was a little better in the kpop world. There wasn’t much controversy today. LuHan released a new music video. Or rather, it’s not new, I just saw it today on allkpop. It’s nice to see he is truly persistent in continuing to sing. 15&’s Baek Yerin is also apparently getting back to singing as well. She has allegedly been working on a solo project in secret and may even be about to release a music video.

Alexandra of RAINA talked about what it is like to be a member of the girl group that’s been garnering a lot of attention due to her addition. She published a posted entitled, “Being Alex Reid” where she talks about her love for kpop and how this has been something she’s wanted to do for a long time. For her, it is truly a dream come true. I’m really happy for her.

I wish I could say the same for Unpretty Rapstar 2.

Unpretty Rapstar 2 has been surrounded by controversy for quite some time now. Since the line-up was first announced, people have found many many reasons to hate the new season. And let’s be honest, Truedy didn’t help much at all with her antics, causing netz to call her a “cosplayer” for trying to pass as Afro-Korean.

But now, a new topic has emerged in the “we hate Unpretty Rapstar” campaign, is the show rigged? Allegedly, it just might be. It seems that the winner of the show was chosen long before the show even aired. Of course, this is all just alleged and not actually proven true. But why are people believing it?

“It’s now been revealed that Truedy, Heize, Kasper, and Ash-B had actually signed contracts with Mnet (CJ E&M) before the show started filming. It’s actually not new because one of the girls had been revealed to have left her company and signed with CJ E&M before the show started airing, but back then, CJ E&M had stated that the rumors were false.”

Now of course, all of that could be explained away and it hasn’t exactly been proven just yet. But it is cause for concern if it’s true. Already, Kasper, Heize, and Ash-B have been eliminated. So will Truedy be the winner? Win or lose, it’s true that the four of them signed with Mnet before this show aired, there’s going to be a serious problem not only with credibility but also with objective and non-bias voting.

We shall see what happens.

But in the meantime, it’s no secret that SM Entertainment has been planning on creating this new multinational group next year. They’re still in the development stages and planning out many different projects. But this new group is the main thing on everybody’s mind at the current moment.

So why is this new group of such importance? Well because the sound is going to be something totally different from what SM has previously produced. The music from SM has been pretty varied thus far and they have an explanation for it.

According to Lee Sung Soo, the production team leader, SM has been trying to find their identity over the last few years.

“It can be said that the past few years have been a time to ‘find ourselves’ at SM… The agency needed to think about the music we were good at and the music that people want to hear…We are definitely going to use the know-how we’ve piled up over the years… The new group will be an extension of EXO. After H.O.T., TVXQ, and EXO, we are trying to continue the trend of producing a hit male group every five years or so.”

Fans are already picking out who they want to be included in this group and even saying how big the group should be. I have my own personal picks for it but I think I’ll keep that to myself for now. I haven’t been doing to well with the guessing game these days.

But thankfully, I don’t have to guess about this! 9Muses Comeback!!

The ladies have officially announced their comeback and despite Sungah’s ankle injury, the date won’t change. Get well soon Sungah!

I’m personally really excited about this as I love Brown Eyed Girls. I guess pretty soon we’ll be hearing of their new single? Wishful thinking but it could happen!

Tao | Fighting Back Against SM Claims [Update]

Looks like we’re in the midst of yet another “War of the Words” between Tao and SM Entertainment. Yesterday, SM released a statement following their latest lawsuit against Tao saying that he is essentially willfully and knowingly violating his terms of agreement (contract) and so is everyone helping him to create and release new music as well as promote.

Well today, Tao decided to speak up for himself against these claims. Here’s a snippet of it but you can see the full statement at allkpop.com.

“…SM delayed Tao’s treatments of injuries that he sustained during his celebrity activities due to a lack of basic protection of his livelihood. In addition, SM also had many problems, discriminating between their Korean and Chinese celebrities…There is an exaggeration within SM’s announcement. Blowing up Tao and SM’s contract dispute into a matter of [disturbing] cultural exchange between China and Korea, is an attempt to ruin Tao’s celebrity life through the means of moral criticism. We think of it as a shame that such a statement has been brought up. According to the principles of contract relativity, no third parties should be brought into the lawsuit between SM and Tao, and no resolution will come from doing so…”

So his claim is that SM is not only discriminatory against their Chinese celebrities but they also don’t take care of them either. Tao argues that he had to go all the way to China to receive treatment for injuries sustained while working with SM and they weren’t even open to negotiations with him or his father. All of this is listed in more detail in his full statement.

The way I see it, the longer this thing drags out, the more the bitter feelings and truths are starting to come out. I say “truths” because I am a firm believer in the “3 sides to every story: your side, their side, and the truth” saying.

This doesn’t look like it’s going to play out amicably at all!

TASTY | Seeks Legal Action Against SM C&C

When I originally saw this earlier today, I honestly was not surprised. TASTY has been going back and forth with their agency for a few months now. I figured it was only a matter of time before they filed an official lawsuit to nullify their contracts.

TASTY, a Chinese-Korean group consisting of twin brothers Daeryong and Soryong, has recently expressed that they would be leaving their agency Woollim Entertainment despite not having the consent of the agency to do so. SM C&C, the mother company of Woollim, is now involved in a lawsuit with the members of the group.

Back in July, both sides released statements expressing their discontent with each other. TASTY said that they no longer wanted to be signed with Woollim Entertainment and sought a nullification. But Woollim responded by saying there wouldn’t be one and that they were still required to promote and release new music under their agency.

I wonder if this will be similar to previous situations with groups wanting out of their contracts to pursue other avenues. I hope they don’t drag this out. I do believe that Woollim should’ve let them go when they asked a few months ago but of course it’s a bit too late now.

And so it begins...
