Foreign Language Tip 2 #18 | Should I Learn Korean Just to Like Kpop/K-dramas?

Really short but I felt like this needed to be said.

Short answer: It’s a personal choice.

Learning a new language is a lifestyle change. It takes time and effort and energy that you never even imagined you would have to exert. There are three reasons I think learning a foreign language is a good idea and then two reasons I say, for those of you who just like kpop/k-dramas and don’t want to learn it, it’s not necessary.

Why You Should:

1) It’s great on your application for jobs.

I talked about this before. Learning a foreign language just looks good to employers. It shows you’re diverse, it shows you’re a hard-worker and it also allows you to speak to visitors or other people who are involved with the company you work for who don’t speak English or the native language of your country. You can reach more people because you speak more than one language. So don’t limit yourself!

2) It’s a good way to experience a new culture.

3) You never need subtitles/translations.

Maybe this isn’t the best reason in the world to learn Korean if you like k-dramas but just think about how much more you’ll be able to focus on and see if you aren’t spending half your time reading.

Why You Shouldn’t:

1) Because you honestly just don’t want to do it.

This seems like an obvious answer but a lot of times people do things they don’t want to do just to appease other people. Learning a foreign language is a lifestyle adjustment. If you don’t really want to do it, you’ll only frustrate yourself. It’s okay to not learn Korean and still enjoy listening to kpop and watching k-dramas.

2) You just like listening to the music. “I don’t really care what they’re saying, I just like how it sounds.”

If you don’t want to learn, not only will you not put forth effort but you’ll waste a lot of money on resources that you just don’t really want to use and ultimately will end up discarding later. There are a lot of free resources if you’re just trying to learn a phrase or two.

Don’t be bullied by commentors who tell you this is the wrong way to think. If you just like the music, enjoy your music!
