혼자 (honja) [Word of the Day]

안녀외세요!

This week is ending with a word that I’m sure you’ve heard a lot more than you think you have.

혼자 (honja) | “alone”

i.e.,

  • 혼자 있고 싶어. (honja issgo sip-eo.) | “I like to be alone.” or “I want to be alone.”
  • 나 혼자 여기 이렇게 (Na honja yeogi ireoke) | “I won’t ask why you left me alone” {Kpop Teaches Korean Too | “Kontrol” by Kim Sung Kyu}

I was actually fixated on this word because it looks a lot like a word in Japanese. It looks a lot like “ほんと (honto)”.

Funny story, for those of you who have been following me for a while, you may remember when I told you I began learning Japanese before I jumped to Korean. Well now, I’ve spent so much time learning Korean and memorizing words/phrases/hangul that now, I have no idea how to read Kanji anymore. But despite that, I still remember how to spell some things romanized even if I can’t really pronounce it all that well now.

Alright that’s it! (no more sentimental stories today!)

See ya next week!!
