여기가 어딘가요? (yeogiga eodingayo?) [Word of the Day]

안녕하세요와! (Annyeonghaseyo!)

Ok so this is technically still talking about directions. I was scrolling through pinterest and I ran across this phrase. It’s going to require a bit of a breakdown so let’s get started. It won’t take long!

Let’s start with 어딘가요 (eodingayo). If it looks familiar but kinda… different, it’s because it is! It’s a contraction of “어디 (eodi)” and “인가요? (ingayo)”.

어디 (eodi) = where

인가요? (ingayo) = a way of getting conformation when asking a question.

In the context of the phrase, 여기가 어딘가요? (yeogiga eodingayo?), you are asking for conformation. This phrase means, “Where are we?” or “Where am I?”

여기가 (yeogiga) threw me off a bit because 여기 (yeogi) means “here” and “가 (ga)” is a subject marker, however, in the context of this phrase it is still in relation to location.

So that’s it today! Maybe you can try using this phrase while you’re out and about. Don’t get too lost out there!
