탓 (tat) [Word of the Day]

안녕하세요! (Annyeonghaseyo!)

Ok so today’s WOTD going into the weekend is a Kpop Teaches Korean Too Lesson! I love the song “Hurt Locker” by 9Muses. It’s a great “break-up-never-getting-back-together” song for those of you looking for one. One of the words I wanted to highlight was 탓인지 (tas-inji). It’s a bit of a breakdown but we’re going go through this step by step.

“누구의 탓인지?” (nuguui tas-inji?) = Who’s fault is it?/Who’s to blame?

Let’s start with 탓 (tat).

탓 (tat) [n]: “cause; reason; fault; blame”

인지 (inji) =  knowing; thinking; guessing

  • this is technically a suffix that is added to verbs in the form of -(으)ㄴ/는지
  • -ㄴ지: follows vowels
  • -은지: follows consonants

So that’s just the basics for today. We will go into more detail on this during the Grammar of the Week as well vowels and consonants in Korean.

-월요일까지! (wol-yoikkaji!)
