지켜보다 (jikyeoboda) [Word of the Day]

안녕하세요! (Annyeonghaseyo!)

Today’s word going into the weekend is one I hear often in kpop. I think a vast majority of my vocabulary comes from kpop honestly. It’s truly a great source for learning not only colloquial terms but also how to pronounce words. The word today is 지켜보다 (jikyeoboda). You’ve probably heard this word a lot but shortened to just 지켜. Originally I thought they were two separate words but apparently they aren’t.

지켜보다 [v]: “to look after; to take care of”

Example:

  • 지켜 달라고 기도합니다. (Jikyeo dallago gidohabnida.) = “Praying that you’ll be protected.” Younha “Pray”
  • 그를 기켜봐. (Geuleul jikyeobwa.) “Look after him.”

So that’s it for today. New WOTD, Grammar of the Week, Vocabulary List and Artist of the Week next week. It may come a littletter earlier since I have a few things to do over the weekend so be on the look out for it!

-월요일까지! (wol-yoilkkaji!)
